TEE IT FORWARD:
Want to have more fun and lower your score? Then take the recommendations of the PGA and USGA and tee off from the distance that is “right” for your level of play. Think about it – should you be teeing off where a woman with a single digit handicap does? Of course not. How can you expect to have pars and birdies from that long of a distance?

Tee It Forward recommendations are being made with the idea that if a golfer has fun and scores to their ability, then they are more likely to play again. As one improves both in distance and confidence, then the yardage should increase. The recommendations below are also to help with pace of play which affects everyone’s enjoyment of the game especially the groups playing behind a learning, beginning or intermediate player.

This chart is a guideline to help learning, beginning and intermediate golfers align their average driving distance with the course length best suited to their abilities along with the average distance for the teeing areas for par 3’s, 4’s and 5’s. Another tip for better shots is to tee up one’s ball for each shot. This will make ball contact is easier. Of course, you can’t do this is competition but when you are playing with friends, why not do so and hit further.

Many courses may not have teeing areas for the recommended yardage below so players should find a flat, ‘unobstructed view of the green’ area in the fairway at the suggested yardage below. Look for yardage markers including the 100 yard marker (red), 150 yard marker (white) and 200 yard marker (blue) for reference. Recommended yardages for Tee Off distance are approximate. When you find that you can regularly score bogey (one over par) then move back another 50 yards. Always pick up and move on to the next hole after triple bogey (three over par).

DRIVER DISTANCE (average) RECOMMENDED 18 HOLE YARDAGE TEE OFF DISTANCE FOR PAR 3 TEE OFF DISTANCE FOR PAR 4 TEE OFF DISTANCE FOR PAR 5
50 Par 3 course 50 X X
75 Par 3 course Up to 75 Up to 100 X
100 2,100 – 2.300 Up to 75 Up to 125 Up to 275
125 2,800 – 3,000 Up to 100 Up to 175 Up to 250
150 3,500 – 3,700 Up to 125 Up to 225 Up to 325
175 4,400 – 4,600 Up to 150 Up to 300 Up to 425

Use these recommended yardages above and find yourself having more fun and scoring more pars and birdies.
